October 7, 2022

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has tasked Rivers United to go for victories in the team’s CAF Champions League matches against Wydad Athletic Club of Casablanca with cash prize of $40,000.00 on offer for the team if they qualify for the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

Nigeria Professional Football League kings Rivers United will host the Moroccan side on Sunday (9 October 2022) in the first leg of their season round clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt with a win over two legs guaranteeing a berth in the money-spinning group stage of the competition.

Governor Wike was represented by the Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barrister Chris Green when the state government hosted the team.

“The Governor, who is the number one fan of this club, has asked me to inform you all that the people of Rivers State are solidly behind you in this national project,” as he addressed the players, coaches and officials of the club ahead of this weekend’s game.

“I also want to let you know that the Governor has graciously approved the sum of $20,000.00 for each payer for winning last season’s Nigeria Professional Football League title.

“The Governor has also announced that if you qualify for group stages of the CAF Champions League, you will receive $40,000.00 each.

“So go out there and compete with dignity, honour and the traditional Rivers spirit to put smiles on the faces of Rivers people and indeed all Nigerians,” the Commissioner concluded in behalf of Governor Wike.

Captain of the side, Austin Festus in his response on behalf of the players, thanked the Governor and Commissioner while adding that the players will strive to justify the confidence reposed in them by the Governor and people of Rivers State.
