Pochettino and other PSG coaches before him had all won the domestic trebles but were unable to get their hands on the European title.

Pochettino’s sack had been agreed in principle between the PSG hierarchy and the Argentine coach but was never made official until Tuesday. With the termination of his contract settled, PSG had went in search of a new manager.

A tweet by the club on Pochettino’s departure read thus:

“Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the Club.

“The Club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future.”

Galtier in his first interview with the media on Tuesday revealed that new Sporting Director Luis Campos was key in his decision to accept the offer.

“Campos’ presence was decisive. I accepted PSG job with a lot of humility but with great determination.

“We all have to work together to make people happy. Alone it is difficult but together we are much stronger.

“I have spoken with Luis Campos to convince players to join us. I have total confidence. It’s a job of passion.

“There is no better place than PSG to win trophies,” said Galtier as he reflected the mood of the club owners.

The French Ligue 1 season will begin in the first week of August 2022.
