Presidency Sets Up Committee To Revamp Basketball In Nigeria

Nigeria at risk of missing FIBA Women’s World Cup, Afrobasket 2023 and Olympic games in 2024

The Presidency through the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development on Monday announced the members of the Interim Management Committee to ‘oversee the development of basketball in Nigeria’ reports Prime Business Africa.

President Muhammadu Buhari believed by many Basketball-loving Nigerians to have acted on the recommendation of Sports minister, Sunday Dare directed that the Committee be set up and consequently withdrew Nigeria from international competitions for two years.

The women’s basketball national team D’Tigress are scheduled to participate in the 2022 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Australia between September and October

Monday’s announcement was contained in a release made available to the media by Mohammed Manga, Director, Press and Press Relations.

Members of the management committee are Dr. Henry Nzekwu, Mr. Udon Ubon HHumapwa, Mr. Frank Jitubhoh, Zenith Bank Representative, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, Mr. Peter Nelson, Group Captain Rahinatu Garba, Aderemi Adewunmi, Oluchi Nzekwe and Sani Adio ( SAN).

The Committee are tasked to draw up programmes that will revamp basketball from the grassroots in Nigeria, revive its moribund domestic leagues and attract cooperate sponsors for the development of the game.
