2023: Niger Govt Demands Resignation Of Public Servants Aspiring For Political Offices

Niger State government has directed all political appointees and public servants in the state who are aspiring to elective political offices in the 2023 general elections to submit their resignation letters on or before 31st March, 2022.

This notice is contained in a memo signed by Secretary to Government of Niger State, Ahmed Ibrahim Matane dated 21st March, 2022.

According to the memo, the directive is in line with the Electoral Act 2022 recently assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari which specified that political appointees and other public office holders who want to contest for political offices are expected to resign prior to conduct of party primaries.

Matane urged the concerned persons to strictly comply with the directive.

The memo reads in part: “You will recall that His Excellency, the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, recently assented to the ‘Electoral Act, 2022’ which was released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on 26th February, 2022 along with the Timetable and the Schedule of Activities for 2023 General Elections, specified that political appointees and other public servants aspiring for political offices are expected to tender their resignation prior to conduct of party primaries.

“In view of the foregoing, therefore, and in compliance with the provision, all Political Appointees and other Public Servants serving in both State and Local Governments of Niger State aspiring for political offices should submit their letters of resignation to the office of Secretary to the State Government (SSG) on or before 31st March, 2022.”
