The 3-km (1.9-mile) New Yalu River Bridge connects Dandong, in China’s northeastern Liaoning province, with Sinuiju in North Korea, a key gateway for bilateral commerce. Construction was completed in 2014, but the bridge remained unused for more than a decade because connecting roads and customs facilities on the North Korean side were unfinished.

The new crossing provides an additional route for road transport between the two countries and an alternative to the existing Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge, which carries road and rail traffic across the border.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang and North Korean Premier Pak Thae-song addressed the opening ceremony by video, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua. The opening underscores efforts by Beijing and Pyongyang to strengthen bilateral economic and trade ties.
China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner. Chinese exports to North Korea rose by 25% to $2.3 billion in 2025, their highest level in six years, although trade remained below levels recorded before United Nations sanctions were tightened over Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile programmes.

For China’s northeastern border region, the crossing adds another transport link with North Korea. Dandong has long served as a principal hub for bilateral commerce, while Sinuiju is a major entry point for goods entering North Korea from China.
The opening follows renewed diplomatic engagement between Beijing and Pyongyang, including a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June. North Korea has also developed transport links with Russia, including a road bridge across their shared border.
The bridge adds capacity to one of North Korea’s most important trade corridors with China, but its commercial impact will depend on the volume of freight it attracts and the efficiency of customs procedures.
With China already North Korea’s largest trading partner, the crossing offers an additional channel for bilateral commerce, although any sustained increase in trade will also be shaped by international sanctions and demand on both sides of the border.
