Ruto, AU Congratulate Abiy on Re-election as Ethiopian Prime Minister Begins Second Term

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed began a second five-year term on Monday, Oct. 5, after the House of Peoples’ Representatives formally appointed him to lead the federal government, drawing congratulations from Kenya and the African Union, Prime Business Africa reports.

The appointment was made during the opening session of the first working year of the House’s seventh parliamentary term, following Ethiopia’s recent national election and the formation of a new federal government. Abiy took the oath of office after his appointment, formally beginning his second term.

Kenyan President William Ruto congratulated Abiy, describing the renewed mandate as a vote of confidence in his leadership and vision for Ethiopia.

“I wish you continued success as you lead Ethiopia to achieve its transformation agenda,” Ruto said, adding that Kenya looked forward to working closely with Ethiopia to advance shared interests for the benefit of their peoples, the region and the wider global community.

 

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf also congratulated Abiy on his re-election, highlighting Ethiopia’s role as host of the AU headquarters and a major diplomatic centre for the continent.

Youssouf said the AU looked forward to continued cooperation with Abiy and his government in advancing Africa’s integration, peace, security and development agenda.

The swearing-in formally completes a key stage in the establishment of Ethiopia’s new administration. The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic community and invited guests.

 

Abiy’s second term comes as Ethiopia seeks to advance its economic and political transformation while addressing security challenges and strengthening ties with neighbouring countries and regional institutions.
