A student pilot and a flight instructor were killed on Friday when a Kenya School of Flying aircraft crashed during a training flight in Kipeto, Kajiado West, authorities said.

The aircraft crashed near the Kipeto Wind Power Project while carrying the two occupants, according to Kajiado West Sub-County Police Commander Maureen Kuto.

The student pilot died at the scene, while the instructor succumbed to injuries while being taken to Kajiado County Referral Hospital, police said. Their bodies were taken to the hospital mortuary pending further procedures.
Preliminary reports indicated that heavy morning mist and poor visibility may have contributed to the crash. Police said the pilot attempted an emergency landing after encountering poor visibility, although investigators have yet to establish the cause of the accident.

The aircraft was extensively damaged, with debris scattered across the crash site. Police and emergency responders secured the area as aviation authorities began examining the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The Kenya School of Flying was expected to issue a statement after notifying the victims’ next of kin.
