Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has resigned as part of a sweeping government reshuffle initiated by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a move that has sparked concern over the future of the country’s wartime military reforms.
Fedorov announced his resignation in a statement posted on social media, expressing gratitude to President Zelenskyy, the Armed Forces of Ukraine, defence officials, volunteers and international partners for their support during his six-month tenure.

Describing the position as the greatest honour of his life, Fedorov said it had been a privilege to serve the country during one of the most challenging periods in its history and pledged his continued support for Ukraine’s defence efforts.
Appointed defence minister in January 2026 after previously serving as Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation, Fedorov led a series of technology-driven reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s military capabilities.
During his tenure, the Defence Ministry accelerated domestic drone production, expanded battlefield innovation, enhanced air defence systems, improved military procurement processes and promoted greater transparency in defence spending.
His resignation comes as President Zelenskyy undertakes a broader cabinet reshuffle that also saw the departure of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko has been nominated to succeed Fedorov as defence minister, subject to parliamentary approval.

The decision has drawn criticism from some lawmakers, military analysts and civil society groups, who argue that replacing a minister widely credited with advancing military innovation could slow ongoing defence reforms at a time when Ukraine continues to face intense Russian attacks and mounting battlefield challenges.
Following the announcement, reports indicated that protests broke out in parts of Ukraine, with demonstrators expressing opposition to Fedorov’s removal and calling for his reinstatement.
Separately, Ukraine’s Deputy Air Force Commander, Colonel Pavlo Yelizarov, reportedly tendered his resignation, describing Fedorov’s dismissal as “a major blow” to the country’s defence establishment.
The Ukrainian government has not publicly disclosed the specific reasons for Fedorov’s removal.
However, the cabinet reshuffle is widely seen as part of President Zelenskyy’s effort to reorganise his administration and strengthen state institutions as the war with Russia enters another critical phase.
