NARD Launches Investment Cooperative to Expand Financial Access for Nigerian Doctors

July 7, 2026

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has launched the Nigeria Doctors Investment and Credit Cooperative Society, a member-owned financial cooperative designed to improve access to savings, investments and affordable credit for Nigerian doctors in a move aimed at strengthening their long-term financial security, Prime Business Africa reports.

The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday by NARD President Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, fulfils one of the association’s key commitments to establish a sustainable financial platform that supports doctors beyond their clinical careers.

Usman said the cooperative was officially registered after months of documentation, regulatory scrutiny by the Federal Department of Cooperatives and final approval by the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.

He described the establishment of NDICCS as a significant milestone that would promote financial inclusion among doctors by enabling members to save collectively, invest, access low-interest loans, build wealth and create a dependable financial safety net.

The development comes at a time when many Nigerian doctors face mounting economic pressures, with rising living costs, limited access to affordable credit and increasing migration of healthcare professionals. NARD believes the cooperative will provide members with a structured platform to improve their financial resilience while supporting personal and professional aspirations.

Usman commended the NDICCS management team, led by NARD’s National First Vice President, Dr. Divine Ebidimie Irole, for driving the initiative from conception to registration, describing the achievement as the product of months of dedication and collaboration.

He clarified that although the cooperative was initiated by NARD, it would operate as an independent legal entity governed by its approved bye-laws and the provisions of the Nigerian Cooperative Societies Act, 2004.

According to him, the governance structure is intended to guarantee transparency, accountability and adequate protection of members’ interests.

The NARD president added that the association would provide temporary financial support for logistics and operational needs during the transition period until the cooperative becomes fully operational and financially self-sustaining.

He urged resident doctors nationwide to join the cooperative, stressing that its success would depend on members’ active participation.

“The strength of every cooperative lies in the commitment of its members. The more we participate, the stronger our collective financial capacity becomes and the greater the opportunities we create for ourselves and future generations of Nigerian doctors,” he said.

Usman added that early participation would enable members to take advantage of savings, investment and financing opportunities while helping to build what he described as a lasting financial institution for Nigeria’s medical profession.
