Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), positioning the party as an alternative political force ahead of the next general election.
Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during a mega rally held at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, where he also unveiled the “Reset Nigeria Movement,” a political mobilisation platform aimed at driving nationwide support for his presidential ambition.

Speaking before supporters and party loyalists at the rally, the governor said Nigeria could no longer continue with “politics as usual,” insisting that the country required competent and accountable leadership capable of rebuilding public trust and strengthening institutions.
“Today marks the beginning of a new journey for our dear country. We are not just declaring a candidacy, we are announcing the birth of a new nation where equity, progress and development are not just slogans but realities for every Nigerian,” Makinde said.
According to him, the Reset Nigeria Movement would focus on economic growth, job creation, education, healthcare, infrastructure development, power sector reforms, security and institutional strengthening.
The governor also unveiled a campaign website and a media resource centre to coordinate campaign communication and provide official materials to members of the public.

Makinde described the APM as a “formidable third force” for Nigerians dissatisfied with the country’s existing political structure, adding that his decision to join the presidential race was driven by the need to rescue the country from its current socio-economic and governance challenges.
The declaration comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and mounting internal tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where Makinde remains one of the party’s most influential governors.
Reports preceding the rally had indicated that the event, tagged “Unity Mega Rally Ibadan 2026,” was expected to formalise a political alliance involving the APM and political blocs associated with Makinde and other opposition figures.
Several politicians reportedly linked to the emerging coalition were also expected to be unveiled during the event as prospective candidates for the 2027 elections.
Among names mentioned in reports ahead of the declaration were former Oyo State Commissioner for Finance, Bimbo Adekanmbi, as a possible governorship candidate, alongside former federal lawmakers Stanley Olajide, Olufemi Ajadi and Shina Peller as potential senatorial aspirants under the alliance platform.
Political observers say the development could reshape opposition politics ahead of the 2027 presidential contest, particularly in the South-West, where Makinde has continued to build political influence beyond Oyo State.
