The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly criticised Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, accusing him of inciting violence following remarks he made at an opposition summit in Ibadan, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a statement issued on April 26, 2026, the party alleged that Makinde referenced the historical episode known as Operation Wetie in a manner capable of provoking unrest, while rejecting his claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state.
The APC described the governor’s comments as “reckless” and a threat to national security, stressing that it was troubling for a sitting governor who also serves as the chief security officer of his state to invoke a period associated with political violence.

According to the party, Makinde’s remarks go beyond typical opposition rhetoric and risk encouraging “anarchy, murderous rage and widespread lawlessness” that could destabilise the country. It called on security and intelligence agencies to take the matter seriously and act to protect lives and property.
The ruling party also warned that constitutional immunity does not shield public officials from accountability in matters relating to national security, insisting that no individual should endanger the safety of citizens under the guise of political expression.
Beyond the criticism of Makinde, the APC used the statement to dismiss opposition claims of creeping one-party dominance, attributing challenges within opposition parties to internal crises and leadership failures.
The party accused key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, of contributing to instability within their respective parties, arguing that such issues not external interference are responsible for their current state.
It further maintained that opposition parties have failed to present credible policy alternatives, instead relying on what it described as alarmist narratives and political rhetoric.

Reaffirming its stance, the APC said Nigeria’s democratic environment remains vibrant, noting the presence of multiple registered political parties participating in the electoral process. The party expressed confidence that voters would ultimately judge parties based on competence and vision ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the APC-led administration’s commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening democratic institutions, upholding the rule of law, and advancing its “Renewed Hope” agenda.
