2027: NDC Zones Presidential Ticket to South, Galadima Confirms

May 4, 2026

A chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Buba Galadima, has confirmed that the party has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the southern region, setting the tone for its internal political process ahead of the next general elections.

Galadima made the disclosure during an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, stating unequivocally that the decision had been finalised.

“No missing words, we have zoned it to the South. Therefore, whoever from the South who is interested should go and register quickly,” he said.

Galadima also revealed that the party is concluding arrangements to submit its updated membership register, a key requirement before the commencement of primaries.

“The NDC will submit its register either on the 5th or 6th of this month. Once that is done, we are good to go,” he stated.

According to him, the submission would formally clear the way for the party to begin its internal electoral process, as it accelerates preparations for the 2027 polls.

The zoning decision is expected to shape the calculations of aspirants within the party, particularly following the recent alignment of key political figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso with the emerging platform.

In the same interview, Galadima linked the movement into the NDC to internal challenges within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing a court ruling he described as a “booby trap” that undermined confidence in the party.

“We didn’t leave the ADC until there was a judgment setting a booby trap for everybody within the party,” he said.

He also called on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to join the NDC, urging broader opposition unity ahead of the elections.

“We are particularly calling on Atiku Abubakar to come to the NDC so that there will be a level playing ground for everybody,” he added.

Galadima further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weakening opposition parties, including the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Labour Party (LP), although the claims remain unverified.

He maintained that the NDC is entering the political space without legal encumbrances, positioning it as a stable platform for opposition figures as realignments continue ahead of 2027.
