Nigeria’s largest carrier, Air Peace Limited, has clarified circumstances surrounding the disruption of its London–Lagos service on May 1, 2026, following widespread social media claims that passengers were stranded without adequate care, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a statement, the airline said the flight, scheduled to depart from Gatwick Airport, was cancelled after the aircraft suffered a bird strike an incident it described as a recognised force majeure in aviation that necessitated immediate grounding for safety checks.
The carrier stressed that the aircraft could not proceed without undergoing comprehensive inspections in line with global aviation safety standards.

Responding to allegations of passenger neglect, Air Peace said those affected were duly informed of the development and provided with support, including hotel accommodation at the Hilton London Gatwick and transit arrangements.
It, however, acknowledged that logistical challenges, including congestion at the airport and delays by ground handling services responsible for baggage processing, slowed the movement of some passengers to their hotels.
The airline explained that baggage handling at international airports is carried out by designated third-party operators under strict regulatory procedures, limiting direct airline control over the process.

Air Peace maintained that communication was sustained throughout the disruption, including updates from the flight captain, and added that all passengers were offered accommodation, with many already lodged while arrangements are ongoing to deploy a replacement aircraft.
While expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, the airline criticised what it described as unwarranted criticism over a safety-driven incident, reiterating that operational decisions were taken in the interest of passenger safety.
It added that it remains committed to improving service delivery and ensuring passenger welfare during unforeseen disruptions.
