Army Confirms Death of Colonel, Six Soldiers in IED Incident After Monguno Attack

April 13, 2026

The Nigerian military has confirmed the death of a Commanding Officer and six other soldiers following an improvised explosive device (IED) incident in Monguno, Borno State, after an insurgent attack on a military position, Prime Business Africa reports.

In an official statement issued on April 13, 2026, the Joint Task Force, North East, operating under Operation Hadin Kai, said troops of Sector 3 came under what it described as an “isolated infiltration attack” by terrorists at a location identified as Charlie 13 in the late hours of April 12.

According to the statement signed by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the troops engaged the attackers in a firefight and successfully repelled them, forcing the insurgents to retreat while maintaining control of the position.

However, in the aftermath of the engagement, tragedy struck as the Commanding Officer identified in earlier reports as Colonel I.A. Muhammad was killed while moving toward the troops’ location.

“While courageously proceeding to the troops’ location to personally assess the situation, [he] encountered an Improvised Explosive Device which severely affected his vehicle, leading to his death alongside six other gallant personnel,” the statement said.

The military described the fallen officer’s actions as emblematic of “the highest traditions of military leadership,” noting that he chose to move toward the frontline despite the risks, in a bid to assess the situation and support his troops.

The attack is believed to have been carried out by fighters linked to ISWAP, a dominant faction in the northeast insurgency alongside Boko Haram.

Military authorities said the deceased personnel paid the “supreme price” in service to the nation, adding that their sacrifice would remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces.

The Monguno axis, near the Lake Chad region, remains one of the most volatile theatres in Nigeria’s protracted insurgency, with frequent attacks on military formations despite sustained operations by security forces.

The latest incident underscores the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in the northeast and the continued risks faced by troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations.
