Kenya, Partners Launch AI-Powered Climate Payload to ISS

April 12, 2026

The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) has announced the successful launch of its Climate Camera (ClimCam) payload to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant milestone for African collaboration in space technology and climate monitoring.

The payload was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, United States, on Saturday at 1:41 p.m. East African Time as part of the Northrop Grumman Cygnus XL commercial resupply mission (NG-24).

According to KSA, the Cygnus spacecraft successfully separated from the rocket’s first-stage booster approximately seven minutes after liftoff and is expected to rendezvous with the ISS on Monday morning, April 13, where it will dock to deliver supplies and scientific payloads.

ClimCam, an artificial intelligence-enabled instrument, is designed to provide near real-time weather and climate data to support environmental monitoring, disaster management, and natural resource planning across Eastern Africa.

The payload is the result of a tripartite collaboration involving KSA, the Egyptian Space Agency (EgSA), and the Uganda National Space Programme. Its development underwent multiple stages, including assembly, integration, and testing in Cairo, followed by final validation and fit checks at Airbus facilities in Houston, Texas.

The project emerged as a winning entry under a competitive opportunity issued by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs in partnership with Airbus Defence and Space, as part of the Access to Space for All initiative aimed at expanding global participation in space exploration.

KSA described the launch as a major step forward in strengthening Africa’s footprint in the global space ecosystem, highlighting the mission’s integration of expertise in Earth observation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics.

Beyond its scientific objectives, officials say the ClimCam mission underscores growing continental capacity to develop and deploy advanced space technologies, while reinforcing commitments to sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and regional cooperation.

The agency said further updates will be provided following the successful docking and installation of the payload aboard the ISS.
