Jordan Condemns Israel Over Restrictions at Holy Sites in Jerusalem

March 29, 2026

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Affairs in Jordan has condemned Israeli authorities for preventing the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem from accessing the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to preside over Palm Sunday Mass, describing the move as a violation of international law and religious freedoms.

In a statement, the ministry’s spokesperson, Fuad Al-Majali, denounced what he called “illegitimate restrictive measures” targeting Christian worshippers.

He said the action undermines the longstanding legal and historical status quo governing religious sites in Jerusalem and infringes on the right to free access for worship.

Al-Majali stressed that Israel, as an occupying power, holds no sovereignty over Jerusalem and must refrain from actions that obstruct access to holy sites. He called for respect for existing arrangements that ensure freedom of worship for all religious groups in the city.

The spokesperson also criticised ongoing restrictions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, accusing Israeli authorities of limiting access to the compound known to Muslims as Al-Haram Al-Sharif and warning that continued closures constitute a “blatant violation” of international law and humanitarian obligations.

Jordan urged the international community to take action, calling on global actors to compel Israel to halt what it described as violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The ministry further reiterated support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on a two-state solution, in line with international resolutions.
