Explosive Cash‑In‑Transit Heist Rocks Newlands West, Durban

March 28, 2026

Dramatic scenes unfolded outside Midway Mall in Newlands West on Friday, March 27, 2026, as armed suspects carried out a brazen cash‑in‑transit (CIT) robbery that included the detonation of an armoured vehicle and the theft of an undisclosed amount of money.

According to early reports, a group of heavily armed suspects travelling in two vehicles intercepted the cash‑in‑transit van on Newlands Express Way near the shopping centre. The gang reportedly opened fire on the armoured vehicle before deploying explosives to blast the van open.

Footage circulated on social media showed the armoured vehicle engulfed in smoke and debris after the blast, with the suspects quickly loading cash and valuables into waiting getaway cars. They then fled the scene at high speed.

Emergency services, including emergency medical teams and the South African Police Service (SAPS), responded rapidly to the scene, securing the area and rendering assistance. Traffic in the area was temporarily halted to allow investigators to conduct inquiries and collect evidence.

There has been no official confirmation from police regarding the number of suspects involved, any injuries or fatalities, or whether any arrests have been made. Authorities have not yet disclosed the value of the stolen cash or other items taken during the attack.

This incident comes amid ongoing concerns over violent cash‑in‑transit robberies in KwaZulu‑Natal, with the province historically noted as a hotspot for such heists. Analysts have previously pointed to the use of explosives and military‑style tactics in recent years, raising alarm among law enforcement and security experts.

The SAPS have indicated that investigations are underway, and further information will be released as more details are confirmed.
