The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed false widespread social media claims suggesting he was assassinated in response to recent United States and Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

The rumors, which began circulating on Saturday, alleged that Netanyahu had been killed amid escalating regional tensions. In a statement to Anadolu Agency, the Prime Minister’s Office said: “These are fake news; the Prime Minister is fine.”

The speculation appears to have been triggered by a viral video of Netanyahu addressing the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States. Some social media users claimed the footage was artificially manipulated, pointing to an anomaly in which the Prime Minister’s hand appeared to show six fingers.

Fact-checkers reviewing the clip concluded that the visual irregularity was likely caused by camera angle, lighting, or hand positioning, rather than artificial intelligence or any form of video manipulation.

The rumors emerged amid a significant escalation in the Middle East that began on 28 February, when joint Israeli and U.S. airstrikes targeted Iranian positions. The conflict has intensified regional tensions and sparked widespread speculation online.

Adding to the social media frenzy, Iranian Military monitor official account tweeted: “Why does Netanyahu have six fingers in his latest speech video? Has Bibi been killed?”

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office quickly refuted such claims, reaffirming that Netanyahu remains alive and continues to perform his official duties.

The escalation has also had broader regional consequences. Iran has reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy shipments, which typically handles around 20 million barrels of oil daily and nearly 20% of global liquefied natural gas trade.

The episode underscores the speed at which misinformation can spread on social media, particularly during periods of geopolitical conflict, highlighting the importance of verified reporting from official sources.
