Nigeria on Friday congratulated Ghana on the occasion of its 69th independence anniversary, reaffirming longstanding diplomatic and cultural ties between the two West African neighbours.
In a statement issued by the foreign ministry, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tuggar conveyed the message to his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, marking Ghana’s independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
Tuggar described Ghana’s independence as a historic milestone in Africa’s liberation movement, saying it inspired other countries across the continent, including Nigeria, to pursue sovereignty and self-determination.
Join our WhatsApp Channel“Nigeria joins the people of Ghana in celebrating this remarkable chapter in African history and in recognising Ghana’s contributions to democratic governance, regional integration and peaceful development,” the statement said.
He noted that both countries share deep historical and cultural ties and have long cooperated in advancing regional peace, prosperity and African unity.
According to Tuggar, Nigeria and Ghana have played key roles in promoting democratic governance and stability in West Africa while working together through regional and international organisations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the United Nations.
The minister said the relationship between the two countries has been strengthened over the years through cooperation in sectors including trade, investment, education, energy, defence and cultural exchange.
He also said the free movement of people within the region has helped boost economic activity and strengthen people-to-people relations between the two nations.

Tuggar further praised Ghana’s contributions to democratic governance and regional stability, noting that both countries have collaborated in peacekeeping operations, mediation efforts and conflict-prevention initiatives across West Africa.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral relations with Ghana through expanded economic cooperation, diplomatic engagement and cultural exchange.
