The Lagos State Government has formally referred allegations arising from resurfaced social media posts linked to singer Simi to the Commissioner of Police for a preliminary investigation, Prime Business Africa reports.

The update was disclosed by Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), during an appearance on Morning Brief on Channels Television on Thursday, February 26.

Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency had been closely monitoring developments after tweets dating back to 2012 and 2014 resurfaced online, triggering public debate and calls for an investigation.

“In terms of Simi gates, some people have been asking what the institutions are doing. I can speak for what Lagos State is doing,” she said. “What we have done is to actually refer the case to the Commissioner of Police to at least conduct some preliminary investigation.”

She noted that the alleged incidents may have occurred in a crèche facility reportedly managed by the singer’s mother at the time.

Prosecution Dependent on Survivor

The DSVA boss stressed that prosecution would be unlikely without an identifiable complainant willing to make a formal statement.

“It is going to be very difficult to prosecute Simi without a survivor being present,” she said. “To start the process, we encourage anybody who was allegedly sexually assaulted by Simi to please come forward and ensure that their statement is taken.”

She emphasised that criminal investigations, particularly in sexual violence cases, require direct testimony and evidence to proceed in line with due process.

NAPTIP Seeks Credible Information

The development followed an earlier call by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which urged members of the public with credible information relating to the allegations to submit evidence through official channels.

NAPTIP said it would review any substantiated claims in accordance with its mandate, particularly where child protection concerns may arise.

Simi Responds

Reacting to the controversy, Simi said in a statement shared on her X page on February 22, 2026, that the resurfaced tweets had been brought to her attention, prompting her to address the issue.

According to the singer, she was 23 years old at the time the posts were made and was living and assisting at her mother’s daycare while pursuing her music career. She said she frequently shared updates about her daily experiences, including humorous interactions involving children.

Simi denied engaging in any inappropriate behaviour and rejected what she described as attempts to frame the old posts within false narratives. She added that her team had begun deleting some of the tweets due to the sensitivity of the situation for her family, although she initially did not want them removed.

As of press time, no formal charges have been announced, and authorities have not confirmed any arrest. Officials maintain that any further action will depend on the outcome of preliminary investigations and the availability of credible complaints.
