U.S. Seizes Russian Tanker in Atlantic, Russian Lawmaker Calls for Retaliation

January 8, 2026

The United States has seized a Russian‑flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic after a two-week pursuit, in a high-stakes operation that has sharply escalated tensions over sanctions enforcement and global oil politics.

The vessel, now named Marinera and formerly Bella 1, was intercepted by U.S. special forces and Coast Guard teams under a federal court warrant, with support from allied surveillance assets.

The tanker had evaded an earlier boarding attempt near Venezuela in December 2025, changing course, repainting a Russian flag, and re-registering under Russia while fleeing across international waters. U.S. Navy patrol planes monitored the vessel as it moved between Iceland and the U.K., and videos show helicopters and U.S. forces boarding the ship without major incident.

U.S. authorities said the seizure targeted a shadow-fleet tanker used to bypass sanctions, including alleged links to Venezuelan and Iranian oil networks. A second stateless “dark fleet” tanker in the Caribbean was also intercepted in a coordinated operation, U.S. officials said.

Moscow immediately condemned the action, calling it a violation of international maritime law. Russian officials demanded the crew’s safe repatriation, while lawmakers labeled the seizure “piracy,” further straining relations with Washington.

In response, Russian State Duma lawmaker Alexey Zhuravlyov issued provocative remarks calling for military retaliation. He described the seizure as “piracy” and suggested U.S. Coast Guard vessels be targeted with torpedoes, framing the operation as a military invasion. Experts stress that his statements are hard-line rhetoric and do not represent official Russian orders.

The incident comes amid rising tensions over U.S. sanctions enforcement, Venezuelan oil exports, and broader geopolitical friction. The seizure of the Marinera and calls for retaliation highlight the risks of escalation in international waters and the fragile state of U.S.–Russia relations.
