Trump Urges U.S. Probe Into Killings of Christians in Nigeria, Warns of ‘Existential Threat’ to Faith

President Trump has directed the United States Congress to launch an investigation into what he described as an “existential threat” facing Christians in Nigeria, alleging that thousands are being killed by “radical Islamists.”

In a statement issued from the White House and shared on his social media handle, President Trump said Nigeria would be designated a “Country of Particular Concern” due to the alarming scale of violence targeting Christian communities.

“When Christians, or any such group, are slaughtered like is happening in Nigeria (3,100 out of 4,476 Christians killed worldwide), something must be done,” the U.S. President declared. “The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening in Nigeria and numerous other countries.”

Trump directed Congressman Riley Moore, House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole, and other lawmakers to immediately look into the matter and report their findings.

He vowed that the U.S. “stands ready, willing, and able to save our great Christian population around the world.”

Nigeria has for years battled deadly attacks by extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), as well as recurrent clashes between herders and farming communities in the country’s Middle Belt.

While human rights groups have linked many of the killings to religious persecution, Nigerian authorities maintain that most incidents are driven by security and economic factors rather than religion.

President Trump’s statement is expected to intensify international pressure on the Nigerian government and refocus global attention on religious freedom and violence across Africa’s most populous nation.
