Inter Milan Appoint Chivu As New Head Coach, Replaces Inzaghi

Champions League runners-up Inter Milan have appointed Parma boss, Cristian Chivu, as their new manager ahead of next season.

The 44-year-old, a former defender and youth team coach at Inter, leaves Parma after only 13 games in charge and replaces Simone Inzaghi.

Inzaghi led the Italians to the UEFA Champions League final on May 31 as they were battered 5-0 by PSG but has now accepted the coaching job at Al Hilal.

Al Hilal will campaign at the revamped FIFA Club World Cup set to begin on Sunday.

The former Romania international, Chivu, was appointed by Parma in February this year – his first senior coaching role – winning three games as he steered Parma to Serie A safety.

Inzaghi will not have the chance to face hid brother, Filipo who led promoted ….to the Serie A.

Chivu, who has signed a contract until 2027, won three league titles during seven years as an Inter player.

Inter said, external he has “gone through experiences and challenges of enormous importance, events that have shaped him as a man and a professional, binding him inextricably to the black and blue colours”.

Chivu will take charge of Inter during the Club World Cup. They begin their campaign against Mexican side Monterrey on 17 June.

Former Italy international Inzaghi took charge of the club in 2021, leading the Nerazzurri to the 2023-24 league title and winning the Coppa Italia twice.

The 49-year-old also led Inter to the 2023 Champions League final, where they lost 1-0 to Manchester City.

Inzaghi succeeds Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, who led Al-Hilal to the Saudi Pro League title in 2023-24 but was sacked last month after his team were knocked out of the Asian Champions League Elite semi-finals.

The Italian manager inherits a squad containing former Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, ex-Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves who scored Portugal’s penalty winning goal against Spain in the UEFA Nations League final and former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.
