106 Nigerians Repatriated As Ghana Begins Crackdown On Foreign Street Beggars

May 21, 2025

Ghana has repatriated 925 foreign nationals engaged in street begging as part of a government crackdown that began on 9 May 2025. The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) announced the repatriation on 20 May, following weeks of operations across major cities, including Accra and Kumasi.

The crackdown is part of broader efforts by the government to enforce immigration regulations, address the growing issue of street begging, and restore order to urban spaces. With increasing number of foreign nationals, particularly from Nigeria, Niger, and other neighboring countries, being found begging at traffic intersections and busy public areas, authorities are taking action to curb this illegal activity.

The 925 deported individuals include 106 Nigerians. Of these, 39 were adult males, 31 were adult females, and 36 were children. In total, 2,241 foreign nationals have been arrested so far, including 961 males and 1,280 females. Of the 2,241 individuals currently held, 2,073 — over 92 per cent —are from Niger Republic, according to GIS. These individuals were detained from major urban centers in Accra, where street begging has been particularly rampant.

The GIS stated that the operation is ongoing and more arrests and repatriations are expected in the coming weeks. Foreign nationals found to be living in Ghana unlawfully or engaging in begging activities are being processed for deportation. While the crackdown focuses on enforcement, the government is also working with foreign embassies to ensure that the repatriation process follows international standards.

“The Special Operation is being conducted humanely in compliance with the rights of all migrants,” the GIS stated, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism.

The authorities vowed to resume the crackdown to “rid the streets of beggars and clamp down on criminal networks,” while appealing for public support.

“As Ghana’s lead agency in migration management and border security, the GIS assures the general public of its commitment to operating fair and firm immigration systems and contributing to national security and development.”

This latest operation underscores the government’s commitment to regulating immigration and addressing the negative impacts of street begging on public order and safety.
