I Am Safe, Unharmed in Lagos – Sowore Breaks Silence After Attack By Thugs

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has assured the public that he is safe and unharmed after being attacked by thugs at the Lagos City Marathon on Saturday.

Sowore took to his Facebook page to share details of the incident, stating that some individuals launched an attack on him and his team after the event.

Sowore Describes the Attack

In his Facebook post, Sowore wrote; “I am safe and unharmed in Lagos. Yes, some rogue elements launched an attack on us after completing the Lagos Marathon today, claiming that we unlawfully occupied the ‘VVIP’ space post-event. They mobilised thugs to assault us.”

He explained that the attack happened after the marathon, where his presence was allegedly questioned by some individuals who then resorted to violence.

Thugs Target Journalists at the Scene

According to reports, the attackers did not only go after Sowore but also targeted journalists covering the event. Some journalists had their cameras and other equipment damaged during the attack.

One journalist, who was holding a camera, was reportedly grabbed by the neck by one of the thugs. The incident raised concerns over the safety of media personnel covering public events.

Previous Attacks on Sowore

This is not the first time Sowore has faced attacks while engaging in public activities. As a strong critic of government policies and an advocate for human rights, he has been involved in several confrontations with authorities and political groups.

In 2023, he contested the presidential election under the African Action Congress (AAC) and has remained vocal about governance issues in Nigeria.

Call for Justice

Following the attack, supporters of Sowore have called for an investigation into the incident. Many have condemned the violence and demanded that those responsible be held accountable.

While authorities have yet to release an official statement on the attack, concerns remain about the safety of activists and journalists in Nigeria.

Sowore’s assurance of his safety has provided some relief to his followers, but the attack raises broader questions about security at public events.
