The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer, Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, for winning Best African Music Performance at the 67th Grammy Award.

The governor remarked that this achievement is a testament of her exceptional talents and dedication as she is the first African artist to win in that category.

Sanwo-Olu in a statement via his X handle, described the achievement as a historic one. “This historic achievement marks her s the first Nigerian artist to win in this category, showcasing her exceptional talents and dedication,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor also commended other Nigerian artists who were nominated for their outstanding contributions to Nigerian music industry.

Earlier, President Bola Tinubu and other eminent Nigerians have congratulated Tems for her outstanding performance, noting that it shows Nigerians’ overwhelming talents in different spheres of life.

The former Anambra State Governor, and Labour Party flag bearer during the 2023 presidential election has also taken on his socials media account to celebrate the artist’s achievement.

He added that, “Undoubtedly, Nigeria remains home to the endless flow of talents who through their creative arts, continue to put the nation on the global map.”

Tems won the Best African Music Performance Award on 3rd of February 2025 which was held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Defeating her other contenders, she came out victorious with her love song: “Love Me Jeje.”
