US-based Nigerian Surgeon Plans Relocating To Begin World-class Orthopedic Practice In Lagos 

Dr Julius Oni, a Nigerian who is an Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and Director of Global Orthopedics at Johns Hopkins University, has announced plans to relocate to Lagos, Nigeria with his family to begin a world-class orthopedic practice and fellowship training program to train future surgeons that would serve the country’s population.

Dr Oni, who revealed this via a video message circulated on social media said he will be relocating to Lagos Nigeria in July 2024.

He explained that his aim is to offer a world-class orthopaedic care and train future generation of orthopaedic surgeons that would serve the people.

This gesture which comes at a time Nigeria’s health sector is being hit by massive brain drain as medical professionals migrate abroad in search of better opportunities, is considered an act of patriotism.

Dr Oni, who is the director of the Joint Replacement Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University, said: “Specifically, the goal of the fellowship programme will be to train the next generation of joint replacement surgeons that will serve the Nigerian population.”

The medical expert added that he would relinquish his duties at Johns Hopkins University to fully pursue the goal.

He thanked the leadership of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Johns Hopkins University for allowing him to pursue the vision.

On why he Decided to relocate to Nigeria, Dr Oni said that in the 11 years of his medical practice, he has dedicated his time and efforts towards helping other people across the world.

While noting that it will not be easy to achieve it going forward, Dr Oni said he is convinced that it is a noble cause that he is willing to pursue to serve humanity.

The international orthopaedic surgeon, further acknowledged that he can’t do it alone and therefore called for collaboration with other experts and relevant stakeholders in the health sector to help achieve the goal.
