In an event at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas marked the official opening of the Femi Gbajabiamila Hall of Residence on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Addressing the audience gathered at UNILAG’s Main Campus in Akoka, Yaba, Speaker Abbas emphasized the vital role of education in Nigeria’s transition towards a Knowledge-Based Economy.

He hailed the contribution of Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila, attributing the growth in the Education Sector’s budget and the imminent N50 billion Students’ Loan Scheme to the former Speaker’s impactful initiatives.

“In this Hall of Residence lies the testament of dedication from both the government and the generous donor, Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila, to eliminate barriers to education,” Speaker Abbas stated.

Expressing admiration for the Chief of Staff to the President and project benefactor, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Abbas applauded his commitment to national development through tireless advocacy and relentless efforts in attracting impactful projects to Nigeria.

Highlighting the significance of a Knowledge-Based Economy, the Speaker urged a shift from the country’s over-reliance on oil and gas, advocating policies promoting renewable energy, agriculture, solid minerals, and intellectual capacity.

He assured continued support from the Green Chamber in fostering innovation, knowledge-driven growth, protection of intellectual property, and the facilitation of policies enhancing research and development.

In his address, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila envisioned the Hall as a breeding ground for future innovators, describing it as a space where students could freely explore big ideas and tackle global challenges. He expressed hope that the Hall would be the genesis of numerous success stories in various fields.

The event also witnessed commendations from key stakeholders including the Minister of State for Education, Senator Wasiu Sanni-Eshinlokun, and other representatives, acknowledging Gbajabiamila’s wisdom and integrity in advancing national development.

This commissioning represents a step towards creating a conducive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds and fostering a culture of academic excellence at UNILAG, reaffirming its commitment to global education standards.

This four-block residence structure stands as a visible testament to the dedication of Honorable Femi Gbajabiamila and the Nigerian government towards educational advancement, offering 484-bed accommodation and fostering an environment conducive to learning and collaboration.
