ICPC Investigates Alleged 6 Weeks Degree Scheme At Cotonou University; Educational Integrity At Stake

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) has launched a thorough investigation into the Cotonou University in Benin Republic following allegations of a rapid six-week degree awarding system.

This issue has raised concerns as numerous Nigerians are purported to have obtained degrees from this institution through questionable means.

The investigative report, titled “UNDERCOVER: How DAILY NIGERIAN Reporter Bagged Cotonou Varsity Degree in 6 Weeks, participated in NYSC Scheme,” shed light on the situation, prompting the ICPC to take action.

ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, organized a crucial meeting at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja with the undercover reporter, aiming to verify details and dispel uncertainties surrounding the degree scandal.

According to Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, the Commission’s spokesperson, this move was essential in their efforts to ensure the legitimacy of academic qualifications procured from overseas institutions.

Furthermore, the ICPC spokesperson emphasized their commitment to collaborating with relevant domestic and international bodies to thoroughly assess the credibility of qualifications obtained from such institutions, particularly those highlighted in the investigative report.

“The probe aims to scrutinize networks and individuals engaged in these malpractices, aiming to restore and preserve the integrity of our educational system,” the ICPC statement reads.

The Federal Ministry of Education has also suspended the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin Republic and Togo. According to Augustina Obilor-Duru, the Ministry’s spokesperson, this suspension is part of an investigation involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Education from both countries, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), and the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC).

The ICPC has called upon all stakeholders in the educational and governmental sectors to unite in this crucial effort to safeguard the integrity of educational qualifications and eliminate corruption from the system.
