Super Eagles Star Iwobi Pays Glowing Tribute To Late Grandpa, Set For Lesotho, Zimbabwe Games

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi is expected in Nigeria Monday evening or latest Tuesday morning ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe following the burial rites of his late grandfather, Engineer Charles Chuka Iwobi, reports Prime Business Africa.

The funeral rites of the grandfather, Engineer Charles Chuka Iwobi who died on 13 September 2023 began on Thursday (9th November, 2023) with an evening of reflection and commemoration while the requiem mass and interment were held on Friday, 10th November.

Today (Sunday, 12 November 2023), the outing service for the nonagenarian who was 93 – born on 18 April 1930 – will be taking place at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at 1 Pentrepoeth School Road, Morriston, Swansea, Wales, SA6 6HZ.

The former Arsenal and Everton winger cum midfielder will be hoping to play his 8th Premier League game and score his first goal for Fulham this weekend and will join his teammates for Sunday’s 3pm kick off against Aston Villa at the Villa Park.

“In accordance with Dad’s wishes – the funeral (took) place in Swansea, Wales where he has lived for over 20 years.

“He was 93 years old (born on 18 April 1930) and saw his great grandchildren,” Alex Iwobi’s father, Chuka Iwobi who was a onetime player of the defunct Vasco DaGama FC, Enugu told Prime Business Africa.

Fulham star, Iwobi, wrote on his tribute to the late patriarch: “I would like to say a big thank you Big Daddy for all you have done for me and the family.

“God has put many blessings in my life but you are undoubtedly the biggest blessing ever.”

The Iwobi family is from Onitsha, Anambra state. The late Iwobi Snr, lived most of his life in Wales and United Kingdom where he was a civil engineer.

His son, Chuka married Patience Iwobi, the sister of Super Eagles legend, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, from the family of Okocha in Ogwashi Ukwu, Delta state.
