NNPC Denies Plans To Increase Fuel Price

In a bid to allay fears of fuel shortages, NNPC Retail, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has reassured Nigerians of a 30-day fuel supply.

However, the surge in fuel prices has pushed commuters to explore alternative transportation options. As the nation grapples with these dual challenges.

In a Twitter announcement, the oil company said: “NNPC Retail Limited notes the appearance of fuel queues in some parts of Lagos and a few other locations around the country. This is due to reduced Depot loadout in Apapa, Lagos over a few days, and the root cause has since been addressed. We assure all Nigerians that there is ample supply with the sufficiency of at least 30 days. Motorists are advised to desist from panic buying as distribution will normalize over the next couple of days.”

Behind the scenes, the fuel crisis is causing major disruptions. As fuel marketers struggle to import, the NNPCL has once again become the sole importer of fuel due to forex issues and currency market volatility.

For some, the long queues and high prices have led to a shift in transportation choices. Public transportation, despite the doubled fares, is favored over the inconvenience and financial burden of waiting in line to purchase fuel at exorbitant rates ranging from N613 to N620 per litre.

The fallout from the removal of fuel subsidies continues to affect daily life and costs. In Abuja, some fuel stations have reopened, improving availability in parts of the city.

However, the domino effect on the cost of living is undeniable, with rising prices for essential commodities like cooking gas adding to the economic strains faced by many Nigerians.
