Xi, Trump Push For Stable China-U.S. Relations As High-Stakes Beijing Talks Begin

May 14, 2026

Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday opened crucial bilateral talks in Beijing, with both leaders seeking to ease tensions and redefine relations between the world’s two largest economies amid growing global uncertainty.

The talks come against the backdrop of mounting geopolitical tensions, trade disputes, the Iran crisis, artificial intelligence competition and continued disagreements over Taiwan.

Speaking at the opening of the summit, Xi said the world was undergoing “transformations not seen in a century,” warning that the international situation had become increasingly “fluid and turbulent.”

“The world has come to another crossroads,” Xi said, as he raised questions over whether China and the United States could overcome the so-called “Thucydides Trap” a theory suggesting conflict often emerges when a rising power challenges an established one.

Xi said both countries must decide whether they can jointly address global challenges, provide greater international stability and build a brighter future for bilateral relations “in the interest of the well-being of the two peoples and the future of humanity.”

“These are the questions vital to history, to the world, and to the people,” Xi said. “They are the questions of our times that the leaders of major countries need to answer together.”

The Chinese leader stressed that Beijing and Washington share “more common interests than differences,” adding that the success of one country should be viewed as an opportunity rather than a threat to the other.

“We should be partners, not rivals,” Xi said. “We should help each other succeed and prosper together, and find the right way for major countries to get along well with each other in the new era.”

Xi also expressed hope that the talks would help steer what he described as the “giant ship” of China-U.S. relations toward a more stable future and make 2026 a “historic, landmark year” for bilateral ties.

China Invites Donald Trump for State Visit Amid Global Tensions

Trump, who arrived in Beijing on Wednesday for a three-day state visit, is expected to focus heavily on trade negotiations and economic cooperation during the summit.

The U.S. president has repeatedly emphasized the importance of preserving a fragile tariff truce between both countries while expanding Chinese purchases of American goods, including agricultural products and aircraft.

The summit is also being closely watched for possible discussions on the Iran conflict, which has rattled global energy markets and raised concerns over the security of shipping routes in the Persian Gulf.

Analysts say Washington is seeking stronger Chinese cooperation on global security issues, while Beijing remains wary of further U.S. trade restrictions and technology controls.

Taiwan is also expected to feature prominently in private discussions, with longstanding disagreements over U.S. military support for the island continuing to strain relations between the two powers.

Despite those tensions, both leaders adopted a conciliatory tone at the start of the talks, signaling an effort to stabilize ties after years of diplomatic friction, tariffs and strategic rivalry.

The outcome of the Beijing summit is expected to have significant implications for global trade, international security and the broader balance of power between Washington and Beijing.
