Emmanuel OchayiThe Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 1, 2024, as a public holiday to commemorate Workers’ Day, honoring the contributions and dedication of Nigerian workers.
This announcement was made by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday.
According to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Federal Government is committed to promoting excellence, efficiency, and fairness in labor, fostering innovation, productivity, and inclusivity in workplaces.
He emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change and urged Nigerians to remain committed to the present administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The 2024 Workers’ Day is highly anticipated, as President Bola Tinubu may unveil the newly proposed minimum wage for workers. The Nigeria Labour Congress has listed seven demands, including a new minimum wage, the creation of state and local government police, and payment of the new minimum wage by states, local governments, and the organized private sector.
In a statement, Tunji-Ojo said, “Let me reaffirm Mr. President’s commitment to providing a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.” He wished workers a happy celebration and acknowledged their contributions to the nation’s growth.
This year’s theme focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate. The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to prioritizing the safety and well-being of all citizens.
As Nigerians celebrate Workers’ Day, they look forward to a renewed commitment to workers’ welfare and a more productive and inclusive work environment.
