Wimbledon Open: Alcaraz Defeats Fognini, Advances To Second Round

Carlos Alcaraz overcame Fabio Fognini Monday evening in his first victory at the 2025 Wimbledon Championship.

Alcaraz recently won the French Open title in Paris and is keen to add one more title to his medals cabinet.

It took Alcaraz over four hours to claim the win on Monday, he acknowledged the competition offered by his 38-year-old opponent.

Alcaraz spoke post match to the media about his win and opponent who is set to retire after the tournament.

“I don’t know why it’s his last Wimbledon because he has shown, he can still play three or four more years. Unbelievable.”

Alcaraz won 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 victory in the first round.and is set to face Britain’s Oliver Tarvat in the second round on Wednesday.

“Didn’t expect to play five sets against him,” Fognini said. “I had my chance.”

The Wimbledon Open ends on July 13.
