Speaking with reporters after the launch of Germany’s new theatre season theatre with Nigerian writer and feminist icon Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Merkel noted that she took up the feminism title, because she now believes men and women are equal and should be given equal participation in the society and generally, in life.

Admitting her reticence approach from the past, the chancellor noted that she was a bit shy and unprepared to take up the feminism title, but gradually, she came into the understanding of feminism being a specific and important movement, and therefore believes, everyone should be feminist.

In her words, “I wouldn’t have noticed 20 years ago if a panel discussion had been all men. I no longer think that’s OK. There’s something missing.”

Although Merkel’s new stand has elicited reactions from different people owing to her previous wavering opinion regarding feminism, but the chancellor explained that her sudden awareness was not depended on any form of sensitization or advocacy, rather it is automatic, and came with a progressive understanding of who she was as a powerful woman.
