October 1, 2023

Rivers United defied all odds to earn a ticket into the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday evening as they defeated Burkina Faso’s Etoile Filante 2-0 in the return leg of their preliminary round of qualifiers Sunday evening, reports Prime Business Africa.

The first leg of the fixtures ended in a scoreless draw.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ missed two penalty kicks with only just 15 minutes left to the end of the game with the aggregate score still at 0-0.

The scoreline irked the fans and led to their departure from the stands even before the final whistle.

But just as the supporters were giving up on them, the ‘unexpected’ happened.

Alex Oyowah struck in the 89th minute and then converted the third penalty awarded to the Nigerian side with nine minutes added after normal time.
