Emmanuel OchayiIn the wake of escalating energy costs, households across the UK brace for a harsh winter as the regulatory body Ofgem announced a rise in the price cap on energy bills.
With the cost-of-living crisis intensifying, Ofgem highlighted that the surge, effective from January, is an aftermath of soaring wholesale energy prices attributed to Russia’s conflict in Ukraine.
“Any increase in bills will be worrying,” expressed Ofgem’s chief executive, Jonathan Brearley, acknowledging the challenging times ahead.
The anticipated climb in the annual energy bill cap, escalating to £1,928 from £1,834 for an average household consuming electricity and gas, exacerbates the financial strain on households already reeling from the aftermath of scrapped government subsidies and persistent double-digit food-price inflation.
In the face of these economic challenges, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt acknowledged the hardship faced by families, conceding, “People are feeling under pressure because of all the increases in inflation.”

However, despite the government’s efforts to stimulate growth and alleviate financial burdens, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) warned of a record drop in living standards, foreseeing a decline in real household disposable income per person, the most significant since the 1950s.
Hunt’s plans to slash national insurance and introduce measures aimed at boosting the economy came in the wake of grim economic forecasts from the OBR, with growth projections slashed to 0.7 percent in 2024 and 1.4 percent in 2025, lower than earlier estimations.
Additionally, inflation is expected to linger above the Bank of England’s target for a longer duration, prolonging higher interest rates and impacting consumer and business loan costs.
As families grapple with the implications of these economic challenges, the quest to curb inflation remains imperative, with the government acknowledging the pressing need to alleviate the burden on citizens amid the escalating cost-of-living crisis.
