Meanwhile Dutch forward of Nigerian descent Arnaut Danjuma played for 85 minutes before he was also substituted.

An own goal by Pervis Estupinan and a goal by Sadio Mane ensured the Reds took a two-goal advantage to the Stadio Ceramics next week.

Villarreal manager Unai Emery is however upbeat that his team will give Liverpool a tough second leg.

“The match next week will be very different to tonight. They are going to suffer more in Villarreal,” Emery told BT Sport.

Villarreal will also be hopeful of having striker Gerard Moreno back for the second leg, with the 30-year-old tallying 13 goals and six assists in 26 games for Villarreal in all tournaments this term.
