1. Reverse Petrol Price Hike Nigerians Are Hungry, Kukah Tells Tinubu

Archbishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Bishop Mathew Kukah, has expressed concern about the level of economic hardship in the country, stating that many Nigerians are hungry.

Kulah, who spoke at the unveiling of the Progressive Institute in Abuja on Friday, called on President Tinubu’s administration to urgently address the challenges.

He urged the federal government to consider reducing the cost of petrol prices that was hiked recently, due to the impact on Nigerians.

2. Businesses, Families Groan As Petrol Price Hike Increases Cost Of Living 

Business operators and families have lamented the recent hike in petrol prices as they grapple with the escalating cost of living in the country.

The Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) had on Tuesday, hiked the price of Petrol from ₦617 to ₦897 per litre. Independent petroleum marketers also followed suit, raising their prices to ₦950, ₦1,000 per litre and even higher, depending on location.

This has affected costs of transportation, businesses operations and families.

 

3. We’re Taking Hard Decisions for Better Future – Tinubu

Apparently defending the policies of his administration, President Bola Tinubu on Friday, said he is taking tough decisions that would put the country on the path to sustainability in future.

He stated this while reacting to recent hike in the price of petrol across the country.

Speaking at a meeting with Nigerians in Beijing, China, after rounding off his official engagements in the country, Tinubu claimed that the increase in petrol price is a “bold and unprecedented decision” necessary for Nigeria’s growth.

4. Nigerian Govt Grants Licence of For 2.8 million tonnes 

Nigerian government has issued a licence to UTM Offshore Limited for the development of a 2.8 million tonnes per annum Floating Liquefied Natural Gas facility.

The project said to be the first of its kind in Nigeria, aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to boost gas production, distribution, and utilisation under the Decade of Gas Initiative.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas) Ekperikpe Ekpo, while speaking at an event to mark official approval of the licence on Friday, highlighted the importance of the FLNG project to the nation’s energy future.

5. CBN Sells $20,000 to BDCs at New Rate As Naira Weakens

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), says it has approved $20,000 each for eligible Bureau De Change (BDCs) at the rate of N1,580 to a dollar.

This was made known in a statement issued by Dr Williams Kanaya, the Acting Director, Trade and Exchange Department of the CBN.

 

6. Obaseki Reveals Origin Of Rift With Oshiomhole

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said his declaration of state burial for the late Chief Tony Anenih, a top chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has remained the unforgivable sin he committed against former Governor Adams Oshiomhole.

Obaseki who revealed this during PDP’s campaign rally held at Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area, said Oshiomhole had since refused to forgive him.

The governor said his action was in line with his quest for unity of the state, but drew the ire of Oshiomhole who never wanted it.

7. FG Didn’t Stop Under 18-year-old Candidates From Writing WASSCE, NECO – Minister

Federal Ministry of Education has stated that the ministry has not stopped students who are not up to 18 years old from writing the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.

The Minister of State for Education, Dr Yusuf Sununu, made the clarification in Abuja on Friday at an event to mark the 2024 International Literacy Day.

8. EFCC Hands Over Recovered $180,300, 53 Vehicles To Canadian Victims of Fraud 

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over $180,300 and 53 vehicles recovered from Nigerian fraudsters to their Canadian victims.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyode, officially handed over the assets to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, 6 September 2024.

According to a statement by EFCC, spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the recovered 53 vehicles were stolen over a period of time in Canada, and shipped to Nigeria and distributed to multiple locations in the country by the criminal elements.

9. NELFUND Disburses Student Loans to 40 Additional Institutions

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) says it has successfully disbursed loans to students from 40 additional tertiary institutions, bringing the total of benefiting institutions across the country to 59.

NELFund made announcement about the additional disbursement of student loan in a statement on Friday.

The organisation said the expansion marked a significant milestone in its commitment to providing access to quality education for all Nigerian students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

 

10. FG Mandates Use of NIN As Requirement For Buying N40,000 Rice

Nigerian government has said that only public servants with duly registered National Identification Number (NIN) will be allowed to benefit from its cheap rice sale

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, who disclosed this while flagging off the exercise, said the move is to curb racketeering, and is part of efforts to crash the prices of food in Nigerian markets. Kyari said the Rice will be sold strictly on “one man to one bag or one woman to one bag” basis.

The government rolled out 30,000 metric tonnes of milled rice and is selling at N40,000 per bag of 50kg.
