The field of politics is such that requires courage, resilience and focus on the goal says former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku made the point during a chat with leaders of his support groups from across the country in Abuja on Tuesday.

The former Vice President said he contested for the governorship position four different times before he finally won it in 1999, noting that such is the nature of politics.

He said, “In joining politics, you have to be focused, principled and courageous. For example, I contested for the governorship position four times before I was finally elected. That is politics for you. You have to be determined and courageous.”

Oladimeji Fabiyi during an interactive and orientation session with leaders of Atiku support groups at the AIT Conference Room, Abuja, on Monday.

Atiku said he was delighted that more young people are participating in politics today and that it is his dream to mentor the young generation and handover his political structure to them.
“It is encouraging that these days I see many young people come to me declaring intentions to run for various political positions, some state assemblies, some national assembly and even some aspiring to be governors.

“The beautiful thing is that this shows that our democracy is being strengthened. I also started early like many of you. I started in my late 30s. During our time, our direction was to fight the military and return the country to civil rule.

Atiku who has declared his intention to run for office of the president in 2023 election, thanked the leaders of the support groups for the roles they played during the 2019 election and commended the groups for their discipline and determination to be better organized this time than the previous one.

He said, “ that we are more organized now is a reflection of the fact that we are now more experienced and with experience comes more knowledge and what that means is that if there was any mistake that we made last time, we are in a better position to avoid such mistakes now”.

Director General of the Amalgamated Atiku Support Groups (AASG), Hon Oladimeji Fabiyi in his remarks during the interactive seesion with the leaders of the support groups, said the meeting was to familiarize them with the goals and direction of the campaign for the 2023 elections.

Fabiyi hinted on issues posing challenges to the current government such as insecurity and poor economic indices, which Atiku would tackle if elected as president.

He reminded the leaders of the Atiku Support groups of the challenges ahead as they embark on nationwide campaign to sell their candidate and urged them to remain undaunted as they preach to the citizens about what Atiku hopes achieve as president.

Fabiyi said, “Friends and compatriots, let’s not deceive ourselves. I am not one to tell you that the journey ahead of us is an easy one, or that there won’t be challenges. We will be called names and people who profit from the current dysfunctional form that Nigeria is will try their best to stop us.

“Those people who want to keep us in divided lines, the very apostles of zoning, will not relent in playing tricks that will make us think that where the president of Nigeria comes from in 2023 is more important than who the next president is. The logic behind such an argument is like comparing quality with quantity.”

“Of course, what we want in moving Nigeria away from the precipice of outright collapse is a quality hand, a hand that is adroit in the arts of leadership and someone who has earned a reputation of being a unifier and a stabilizer,” Fabiyi told the Atiku leaders of the support Groups.
