Water is a vital component of the body’s health and function and without it, the body can’t run smoothly throughout the day.

Drinking water first thing in the morning on an empty stomach offers so many benefits which include;

1. Fuels the brain
The brain contains 70 per cent of water and it helps to maintain the optimal function of the brain. When a person is dehydrated the brain lacks water and that results in less fueling of the brain which presents as headaches, feeling tired, and mood swings

2. Flushing out body toxins
Drinking water promotes bowel movement and cleanses the digestive tract of toxins, bacteria, and also helps in the removal of waste products via urination.

3. Weight loss
Water helps reduce cravings by keeping the stomach full thereby preventing overeating which can help in weight loss. It also improves the digestion of food which results in feeling less hungry.

4. Improves metabolism
Research has proven that water aids the body to burn calories faster by increasing the metabolic rate of the body. A good metabolism helps to maintain a healthy body weight, reduces constipation, and keeps the body energetic.

5. Enhances skin complexion and radiance
Having a good water habit and staying hydrated help keeps your skin glowing and radiant by giving the pores moisture and flushing out toxins that affect the skin cells. A dehydrated skin presents wrinkles, dryness, deep pores, and a scaly texture which is very unhealthy for the skin.

6. Promotes healthy hair
Much like a plant needs water to grow, so does hair. Water is a key ingredient that supports vitamins, which contribute to your hair growth and the strength of your hair, increasing its growth. When the roots are hydrated, this will eliminate problems like dandruff whereas when the root is dehydrated it affects the root of the hair making it rough, brittle, and dry.

How much water is needed?

Studies have produced varying recommendations over the years. But your individual water needs depend on many factors, like exercise, environment, pregnancy, and breastfeeding including your overall health.

About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men.
About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.

These recommendations cover fluids from water, other beverages, and food. About 20 per cent of daily fluid intake usually comes from food and the rest from drinks.

How do I know if I’m drinking enough?
1. You rarely feel thirsty
2. Your urine is colorless or light yellow

To ensure you’re staying hydrated, drink when you feel thirsty and always listen to your body.
