Seun Kuti's Concert In Jeopardy Following Arrest

The highly anticipated Spain concert of Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti hangs in the balance following his recent arrest.

According to reports from Sahara Reporters, the musician, renowned for his captivating performances, was scheduled to take the stage in Majorca, Spain, today, on May 20, 2023.

However, his arrest has thrown his performance into uncertainty. Seun Kuti found himself in police detention for an additional four days after an extension was granted to allow for further investigation into the incident that led to his arrest.

The musician voluntarily surrendered himself to the authorities after being accused of assaulting a police officer in uniform on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, Nigeria, on Saturday, May 13, 2023.

The incident gained significant attention after a video of the altercation went viral on social media platforms. Following the circulation of the video, the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, issued a statement ordering the arrest of Seun Kuti.

In the official statement, the Inspector General of Police stated, “The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, CFR has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.

The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.”

Seun Kuti was subsequently arraigned in court, facing charges of assaulting a police officer, an offense that contravenes Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act. As of now, he remains in police custody until May 23, 2023, as investigations into the incident continue.
