Sahara Group Targets Gas, Renewables In Drive For Africa’s Sustainable Energy Future

Sahara Group has reaffirmed its commitment to driving Africa’s energy transition with a strategic focus on gas, renewable energy, and community-centered development, according to its newly released 2024 Sustainability Report.

The report, themed “Beyond Energy: Fostering Africa’s Sustainable Future”, details how the international energy and infrastructure conglomerate is aligning operations with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while embedding sustainability principles into its strategic decision-making.

Ejiro Gray, Director of Governance and Sustainability, said the company has scaled up investments in gas infrastructure, piloted solar energy projects, and implemented nature-based carbon mitigation solutions.

“We see sustainability as the engine of transformation for our business, for communities, and for Africa’s future,” she said, noting that 2024 marked the institutionalization of ESG risk management across all divisions.

Key achievements include more than four million man-hours with Zero Lost Time Injuries, the avoidance of 612,498 kg of CO₂ emissions through recycling, the recovery of 210,000 kg of recyclables, and ₦43.5 million paid to over 1,000 waste collectors under the “Go Recycling” initiative.

The group also reported impacting over 75,000 lives through social responsibility projects in 11 countries, training over 11,000 students in green entrepreneurship, and funding biodiversity and reforestation projects in Ghana, Tanzania, Nigeria, and Dubai.

Sahara Group’s Head of Corporate Communications, Bethel Obioma, said the company’s goal is to ensure Africa’s energy future is both secure and sustainability-led. “Every milestone is a brick in the foundation of long-term value for the planet and its people,” he said. Group Head of HR, Emilomo Arorote, added that people remain central to Sahara’s sustainability drive, with initiatives aimed at education, healthcare access, gender equity, and job creation.

“At Sahara, sustainability is human. It means ensuring growth lifts everyone, especially the underserved,” she said.

The significance of the report lies in its demonstration of how the private sector can shape Africa’s energy future while addressing environmental and social challenges. By prioritizing gas as a transition fuel, investing in renewables, and strengthening community resilience, Sahara Group is showing that energy security and sustainability are not opposing goals but mutually reinforcing drivers of the continent’s long-term growth.
