Russia has warned that several countries are prepared to supply Iran with nuclear weapons following United States airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, an alarming new twist in the rapidly escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
The claim, made on Sunday by former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev, came just hours after US President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had struck Iranian sites in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelIn a televised statement, Trump said the targeted operation was intended to “disrupt an imminent nuclear threat” posed by Tehran. However, Medvedev, who now serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, said the strikes had not only failed to cripple Iran’s nuclear capability but had in fact intensified the crisis, drawing international actors closer to the brink of nuclear proliferation.
“What have the Americans accomplished with their nighttime strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran?” Medvedev asked. “The critical infrastructure of the nuclear fuel cycle appears to have been unaffected or sustained only minor damage. Enrichment of nuclear material – and now we can say it outright, the future production of nuclear weapons – will continue.”

He added, without naming specific countries: “A number of nations are ready to directly supply Iran with their own nuclear warheads.”
Medvedev argued that the US operation had backfired politically and militarily, strengthening Iran’s leadership rather than weakening it. “Iran’s political regime has survived – and in all likelihood, has come out even stronger,” he wrote. “The people are rallying around the country’s spiritual leadership, including those who were previously indifferent or opposed to it.”
He also mocked President Trump. “Trump, once hailed as ‘president of peace’, has now pushed the US into another war,” Medvedev said. “At this rate, he can forget about the Nobel Peace Prize – not even with how rigged it has become. What a way to kick things off, Mr President. Congratulations.”
The US airstrikes follow weeks of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel. In response, Iran launched missile and drone attacks on Israeli territory, prompting further Israeli air raids on Iranian military sites. Iran maintains that its nuclear programme is purely peaceful and has warned repeatedly that any US involvement in hostilities would be “very, very dangerous.”
According to CBS News, US officials have reached out diplomatically to Iran, insisting the operation was limited in scope and not aimed at regime change. However, those assurances appear to have done little to calm the situation on the ground.
“The United States has become entangled in a new conflict, with prospects of a ground operation looming on the horizon,” Medvedev warned. “Israel is under attack, explosions are rocking the country, and people are panicking.”
With the region teetering on the edge of a wider war and the spectre of nuclear weapons entering the equation, world leaders now face mounting pressure to de-escalate before the situation spirals beyond control.
