Rights Group Demands Probe, Possible Prosecution of Sheikh Gumi Over Alleged Terror Remarks

May 24, 2026

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticised the Federal Government over what it described as “dangerous silence and double standards” regarding recent comments made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, calling for his immediate investigation and possible prosecution under Nigeria’s anti-terrorism laws.

In a statement issued on Saturday by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group warned that Nigeria risks legitimising terrorism if influential individuals accused of making comments perceived as sympathetic to bandits are not subjected to scrutiny.

HURIWA referenced Gumi’s recent appearance on AIT on May 19, during which he reportedly urged Nigerians to “learn how to live with terrorists” and suggested that bandits rely on kidnapping proceeds to sustain their operations against government forces.

The organisation described the remarks as reckless, provocative, and insensitive, arguing that such statements could embolden violent criminal groups responsible for widespread killings, kidnappings, and displacement across several parts of the country.

According to the group, at a time when communities continue to face attacks by armed groups and abductions remain rampant, public figures should avoid statements that could be interpreted as rationalising terrorism or portraying violent actors as inevitable partners in coexistence.

HURIWA also backed earlier calls by activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju for Gumi to face prosecution under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

The group argued that the law criminalises not only direct acts of terrorism but also support, encouragement, justification, or ideological sympathy capable of aiding terrorist activities.

The advocacy group accused the Federal Government of operating a selective justice system, alleging that authorities have pursued separatist figures such as Nnamdi Kanu over alleged inflammatory broadcasts while allegedly overlooking controversial comments linked to armed banditry in northern Nigeria.

“The fight against terrorism cannot be selective. A nation that punishes one set of voices while shielding others destroys the moral foundation of justice and weakens public trust in the rule of law,” the statement said.

HURIWA further warned that failure to address statements perceived as sympathetic to terrorists could create the impression that violent groups enjoy ideological protection from influential interests.

The group stressed that Nigerians are exhausted by insecurity, mass abductions, and bloodshed, insisting that leaders, particularly religious figures, should make statements that strengthen national unity and support security efforts.

It therefore called on the Department of State Services, the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the Federal Ministry of Justice to immediately investigate Gumi’s comments and determine whether criminal liability exists under Nigerian law.

HURIWA maintained that no democracy can survive where terrorism is normalised through rhetoric, defended through silence, or treated with political caution.
