President Tinubu Undertakes State Visit to Türkiye to Boost Bilateral Ties

January 26, 2026

President Tinubu will depart Abuja on Monday, January 26, for a state visit to the Republic of Türkiye, in a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two countries, Prime Business Africa reports.

Nigeria and Türkiye have maintained diplomatic relations since 1960, with ties gradually expanding through trade, cultural exchanges, and security cooperation.

The visit follows Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s official trip to Nigeria in October 2021, which resulted in several agreements to boost trade, investment, and collaboration in energy and technology.

During President Tinubu’s visit, both countries are expected to engage in strategic political and diplomatic discussions focused on shared interests in finance, communications, trade, and investment. The agenda includes meetings between high-ranking officials and the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) in scientific research, energy, technical cooperation, media and communications, and military collaboration.

A business forum will also convene investors from both nations to explore potential economic partnerships. Analysts note that the visit comes at a time when both Nigeria and Türkiye are seeking to expand regional security cooperation and unlock new trade opportunities in a changing global economy.

President Tinubu will be accompanied by senior government officials, including: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi SAN; Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd); and Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Hon. Jimi Benson. Other members of the delegation include Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo; Minister of Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.

President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the conclusion of the visit.
