Fakoyejo OlalekanThe use of Kerosene will be phased out by the Federal Government by 2030, President Muhammadu Buhari revealed this at the 15th Annual Banking and Finance Conference.
At the event organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) on Wednesday, President Buhari said the country will transition into gas supply across the country.
He made this known through the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, who represented him at the Annual Banking and Finance Conference.
Kerosene releases greenhouse gases like carbon monoxide, which is blamed for global warming, and President Buhari said the emissions from the usage of Kerosene makes the temperature hotter.
He also attributed the product of fossil fuels as reason for severe rainstorms, rising drought, as well as food security issues, “To tackle this issue, the government has set plans in motion to significantly reduce greenhouse emissions from Nigeria.
“More specifically, by 2030, we aim to eliminate kerosene lighting as well as short-lived pollutants in the oil and gas sector.” The President said.
Prior to his comment, western countries had also been campaigning for an end to fossil fuels, including crude oil, favouring renewable energy to tackle climate change globally.
However, since the war between Russia and Ukraine began, western countries have been backtracking from their quest, heavily seeking oil and gas to fill up shortage from Russia blocking exportation of the commodity, and stepping down the call for greenhouse energy transition.
