The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 polls, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his allegiance to the party, dispelling rumours about his potential exit.
Obi took to his Twitter (now X) handle on Friday, to dismiss rumours that he is about to leave the party after he opposed the decision by the leadership of the party to appoint directors to coordinate the affairs of the ‘Obidient Movement’ within the party.
Addressing questions from a journalist at Abuja airport concerning his recent remarks on the Obidient Movement, Obi stated unequivocally, “I remain a committed, loyal member of the Labour Party. That is my definitive response to all Nigerians who may be in doubt about my party affiliation in the light of recent reports and conflicting interpretations of recent political expressions.”
The former governor of Anambra State emphasised his dedication to the Labour Party’s mission and his role in fostering unity among its members. “As a leader of the party, my aspiration, and desire, working closely with other leaders, is to reconcile our valued members, and partner with like minds and parties all over the country to build a strong and better party that will catalyse and commence the rebuilding of a new Nigeria,” he said.
He further explained that his recent comments were intended to address the concerns of supporters who, while not necessarily affiliated with any political party, are eager for a new direction for Nigeria. Obi reiterated his commitment to collaborating with like-minded individuals and parties to strengthen the Labour Party and pursue a transformative future for the country.
“My statement yesterday was intended to clarify some issues that are of concern to our teeming supporters some of whom are not members of any political party but are desirous for a new Nigeria. Our goal and aspirations remain that a new Nigeria is Possible.”
