Peter Obi Leads Protest at National Assembly, Calls for Mandatory Real-Time Election Result Transmission

February 9, 2026

Former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi joined demonstrators at the National Assembly on Monday, calling for urgent reforms to Nigeria’s electoral process, Prime Business Africa reports.

The protest, organized under the Occupy National Assembly banner, focuses on the Senate’s recent amendment to the Electoral Act 2022, which removed the phrase mandating “real-time” transmission of election results.

Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), emphasized that the Senate must address the technical issues that marred the 2023 elections. Speaking to the protesters at the National Assembly gate, he said, “Real-time electronic transmission of results is essential to restore public confidence and prevent the kind of glitches we witnessed in 2023.”

The demonstration drew members of civil society organizations, opposition party activists, and women’s groups. Protesters began their march from the Federal Secretariat, converging at the National Assembly, where security forces had erected barricades. Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps maintained a strong presence to ensure order.

Civil society representatives clarified that the protest is planned to remain outside the Assembly premises, focusing on peaceful advocacy rather than intrusion.

Participants insist that the law should explicitly require real-time electronic transmission to guarantee transparency and credibility in future elections.

The protest highlights growing public demand for electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general elections, signaling frustration with past electoral shortcomings and a push for legislation that strengthens trust in the voting process.
