Nottingham Forest Manager Cooper Casts Doubt On Awoniyi Availability Against Arsenal

Awoniyi's goals were crucial in Nottingham Forest avoiding relegation last season

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi is likely to miss Nottingham Forest’s opening game of the 2023/2024 Premier League season against Arsenal.

The former Union Berlin star is recuperating from an ankle injury and only just begun training with his teammates few days ago.

Manager Steve Cooper faced the media in his first press conference of the new campaign on Thursday and spoke on the fitness levels of his players ahead of the 12.30pm fixture at the Emirates stadium on Saturday.

“Felipe, for sure. Moussa is just about returning to training, and so is Taiwo, so the game probably comes too soon for them,” Cooper who navigated through the relegation battle with his team told the media as quoted by his club’s website.

Awoniyi scored six league goals last season for his club and was particularly impressive towards the end of the season.

The former Nigeria youth international scored twice against Chelsea and one against the Gunners as they fought hard to avoid the drop, ending the season as club’s topscorer with 10 goals.

However, the duo of Emmanuel Dennis and new acquisition, Ola Aina, are poised to play their first games of the season for Forest.
